‘When we got upstairs, I saw that Charlotte had decorated the walls of her room with new drawings. Replacing the horses were sketches of naked men and women. “What do you think?” she asked.

Speechless, I walked around her room examining the pictures. I had never seen drawings like these, showing every part of the body. Where had Charlotte seen things like this? I was stunned by her drawings of naked women lying down or facing away, and yet they were elegant and beautiful. One drawing was of a man with his hands behind his back, and his eyes looking at the sky. His expression was of pain and sorrow. I felt breathless. In the corners of some of the sketches were odd little creatures that looked human but with horns and wings. “Did you do all these?”

Charlotte pointed to a large black book on her dresser. She picked it up and brought it to her bed, opening it. “I copied a lot of them from this book. It’s full of old paintings by people like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.”

Looking at the different reproductions of paintings and sculptures I could see where Charlotte had found her inspiration: the young man with his finger pointing in the air, the beautiful woman seeming to rise from the sea, her hair streaming down her body.’
